FreshInk. is a literary journal showcasing the creativity of writers and artists at the University of Hull. It will be released annually and is open to all students and staff regardless of their discipline. Here at FreshInk we aim to give writers and artists a chance to see their work in print, often for the first time, and also for students to learn about the publishing process.

This journal began as a small collective idea of three students who had a passion for literature and wanted to do something to show off the talent that we all know is thriving in Hull. We felt that there were not enough outlets for those students who took creative writing seriously. There was the well established student newspaper for those interested in a journalistic style but where was the equivalent for fiction, poetry and art? We realised that in the current economic climate the arts, in all there forms, are commonly deemed as less important than other fields and because of this FreshInk has aimed to inspire the young writers and artists of Hull and to remind them that creativity is as essential as it ever was.

The FreshInk journal will include poetry, short stories, and more experimental pieces such as six word stories and flash fiction. We will also include art work such as paintings and ink drawings. We have received some really interesting pieces which vary in style and content and will thus go forward to produce an exciting and progressive body of work when the journal is published in May.

We are proud to be holding increasingly popular open mic events for the students and the Hull community where people are free to read their work. We see a wide range of techniques and level of experience, from those just starting out to experienced performance poets. We believe that poetry and prose can be enjoyed not just on paper and often viewing them live in this way can open a whole new dimension to the enjoyment of literature. This is why our FreshInk open mic nights will become a regular fixture in Hull, both at the university and at some of Hull’s most prestigious venues, so that going to see live literature can compliment the act of reading it alone. Some of the writers that have submitted work for the journal have already trumped their nerves and enjoyed the thrill of performing to an audience at the FreshInk gigs.

We are also producing a webzine that will have the best work of the journal available so those who are tempted to buy the journal can have a look at some of the work it contains before you get hold of a copy for yourself.

FreshInk is about new and inspired writers, painters and poets joining forces to create something that demonstrates the shear mass of creative energy bubbling under the surface in Hull. We hope you are all as excited about the FreshInk release date in May as we are.

Sincerely,

FreshInk staff
